Whale sharks need help from everyone. Thanks to the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the Shark Research Institute and the Pritzker Laboratory for Molecular Systematics at the Field Museum of Chicago.

"How and where an animal moves has significant implications for its conservation," said Schmidt. For example, because these animals are migratory, they may be moving from protected waters, such as those off the western coast of Australia, to unprotected waters, such as those off the coast of Indonesia. It also suggests that these animals need a global approach to conservation.
