Tweets are Public Screams: A judge in New York has ruled that tweets are public, just as if you “scream out a window,” reports USA Today. The judge ruled that Twitter has to hand over tweets and account details for an Occuply Wall Street protestor arrested in October.
“There is no proprietary interest in your tweets, which you have now gifted to the world. This is not the same as a private e-mail, a private direct message, a private chat, or any of the other readily available ways to have a private conversation via the Internet that now exist,” reads part of the ruling by Criminal Court Judge Matthew Sciarrino Jr., according to USA Today.
Twitter continues to insist that according to its terms of service, tweets belong to the tweeter, not Twitter. But the company has cooperated many times in the past with the government to turn over information from its users. via USA Today
