2. Ocean Energy Harvesters

Taking inspiration from the ocean, Sydney, Australia-based Bio-Power Systems has a few pilot projects that are investigating how best to tap into the renewable energy of wave and tides.

The company's bioStream system is one such project. Its shape mimics the tail fin of a shark, tuna or mackerel, fish known for their highly efficient mode of swimming. Instead of moving through the ocean like a fish, however, the bioStream remains stationary in the moving stream of water. A single point of rotation allows the tail to align with the current's flow. The company is developing systems that could generate 250 kilowatts to 1000 kilowatts, depending on the location.
