We’ve covered Big Dog before, the four-legged robot that’s being developed by Boston Dynamics and DARPA. It’s a marvel of a machine, the way it scrambles over rocky terrain carrying hundreds of pounds of equipment. Try to push it over and it steadies itself in a remarkable animal-like manner. Now it has a new ability. It can throw a cinder block, which weighs approximately 25 pounds, over its shoulder like a rag doll. Check out the video.
To accomplish this new feat, the robot does what other robots don’t: It uses its legs and torso to lend power to the motion of its arm. When you watch the video, you immediately recognize the dynamic, whole-body approach because it’s something humans do all of the time.
