A Kinder, Gentler Way to Wake Up

Philips Wake-Up Light: $169.99

In the dark winter mornings, it feels like nothing can get you out of your warm cozy bed. But then the alarm blares with the 6 a.m. traffic report. After eight (okay, four) blissful hours of slumber, this is a really awful way to wake up your body and mind. We’ve talked about sleep gadgets that gently wake you before, but if you don’t like the idea of keeping your phone by your bedside, maybe a slightly traditional clock would be better.

The Wake-Up Light from Philips is a combination alarm clock and bedside lamp that works by simulating the sunrise, which we are inherently built to respond to. Over a period of 30 minutes, the clock slowly increases in brightness. During that time, light sounds like chirping birds or sounds/music downloaded via USB, will ease you completely out of sleep. It also helps users fall asleep by dimming the light slowly and playing relaxing sounds. According to the company, gradual brightness in the morning prepares the body to wake up and increases a person's energy. Whether that’s true or not, it's a much more pleasant way to wake up than being squawked at by a rude alarm.
