The planet is warming, deserts are growing and populations of people are increasing. So how do you feed everyone without turning Earth into one giant factory farm? Throw a little goo into the mix. That's what industrial design students Ruud van Reijmersdal, Tom Slijkhuis, Joppe Spaans and Jeroen Rood of the Industrial Design Technical University of Eindhoven in The Netherlands. As a final project (PDF) for their studies, the team proposes, among other things, that farmers grow crops inside a nutritious gel designed to protect plants in harsh conditions, while keeping them watered and fed. The goo could be used not only in the desert but also in space.
