I use Google Maps all of the time. Not just to get directions to drive somewhere, but also to find out how far it is to walk somewhere. And there's also a public transit feature, which I don't use because I walk or bike everywhere. Biking in Boston is kind of a crap shoot. Some streets have really nice, wide bike lanes. And other streets, usually the pot-hole ridden, narrow ones, simply have the be-assertive-or-be-road-meat lane.
Now there's a feature in Google Maps to us bikers find a route. You can access the feature in Google Maps via a pull down menu. Just type in where you want to start your bicycle journey and where you want to end up. The map will show you the best route that includes bike lanes. It might not be the fastest route, but chances are it's the safest: it sticks with bike-friendly roads and avoids busy intersections. And the route is probably more picturesque. Here in Boston, many of the bikes lanes wind through parks or along the Charles River.
Now if Spring would just get here!
