If you like to do it yourself then you’ve probably heard of MAKE Magazine by now and their ever-interesting offshoot, Maker Faire. If not, Maker Faire is this crafty combination of DIY meets Burning Man. Hacked bicycles, solar-powered robots, pollution sensing clothing, spoil-detecting milk jugs and fire breathing metal sculptures are just a few of the things you’ll find at the event.
While “official” Maker events only occur in a handful of cities across the country, community-based and smaller scale faires are sprouting up all over the country, if not the world. I see these every year at Maker Faire and they never stop making me chuckle. They’re the perfect combination of ridiculousness and awesomeness. Now if only they were edible! I guess I will just have to build one myself.
Getting that tallboy from the fridge just got easier, right? I really want one of these but I am afraid of what it could lead to. For example, three years down the road and it would take 8 firemen and a crane to get me out of the house.
There is more to Maker Faire than just blowing things up. Some pretty innovative ideas with many future applications also come out of the faire. This pollution-sensing clothing is just one of them.
If robots are ever going to take over the world, it will probably be ones built at Maker Faire, not Skynet. Sorry, James Cameron!
Makers are not afraid of the fire, I’ll tell you that much. This part of the experience is kinda like Burning Man Light. If you want to see a lot of the awesome art on display at Black Rock City but don’t want to deal with camping in the desert for a week, Maker Faire is for you!
