Once you’ve got an iPhone, you don’t tend to take along a separate video or still camera, because the iPhone camera and video features are both powerful and easy to use, so why bother with another device? But there are a few reasons the iPhone isn’t the perfect gadget for some purposes, including the fact that in real life, sand, water, dirt, goop, and slippery hands are the norm, and the iPhone isn’t built to handle those.
But a new kind of iPhone case is coming, and it’s waterproof, rugged, mounts anywhere, and offers a wide angle lens and touch-free recording. Sound too good to be true? Well, it might be, if the iconic.am Kickstarter campaign doesn’t reach its goal.
The iconic.am case is a waterproof and sturdy “universal platform” that can quickly clip onto any of the available quick-release mounts, which include the basic “sticky base”, but that also come in a variety of shapes for specific applications. The company is also offering 3D printed custom mounts through a partnership with Shapeways, so you can get the right mount for you.
The iPhone case itself features an aluminum locking latch and oversized seals, and is designed to be waterproof as well as rugged, with waterproof acoustic pass-throughs for the speakers and microphones. The case allows full use of the buttons and touchscreen, but for recording on the fly, the iconic.am devices uses a wristband in conjunction with a free app to wirelessly start and stop video recording.
