Netflix is splitting up DVDs and streaming.
The company announced Tuesday it is launching DVD-only plans, starting at $7.99 a month for either a streaming-only or DVD-only plan. For unlimited DVDs and streaming, well, that’ll run you $15.98. Even though customers previously could stream for $7.99 and rent one DVD at a time for an additional $2 a month, the company is touting the new plans as “a terrific deal.”
Netflix is touting this move as one that will bring more affordable options, but others are wary. The New York Times’ David Pogue tweeted: “Uh-oh. Netflix just broke up its DVD-by-mail and streaming-video services. For most people, that’s a huge price jump!”
The changes are already in effect for new customers. Existing customers have until Sept. 1 on their current plans before having to switch over.
