Did a Photographer Stumble Upon a Canon 5D Mark III Prototype in Kenya?

Spotted in the wild: A new Canon body and two prototype lenses.

When Stephen Oachs was shooting in Kenya, he came across a Japanese man with limited English who claimed to work for Canon. The man was testing out a 600mm lens and a 200-400mm lens with built-in teleconverter.

What I also noticed was a Canon camera body that I hadn’t seen before. You can see it in the photos I took…I see the “Q” button located by the big wheel on the right, which on the 7D is currently located on the top left. The battery grip seems to have a joystick. I also noticed a “Rate” button…hrm, any ideas? Is this the new 5D Mark III, or maybe the 7D Mark II? This info I was not able to determine.

Canon Rumors inspected the pictures he took of the camera and noticed the body has a joystick on the battery grip, new button layouts, new scroll wheel and perhaps most enlightening of all the fact that there’s no pop-up flash, which seems to suggest it could be the 5D Mark III.

But as with any rumor, take this with a grain of salt. Yet the possibility of a 5D Mark III is exciting news.
