Build and Race a No-Rules Miniature Race Car at the Nerdy Derby

If you were a Cub Scout back in the day, you may remember the Pinewood Derby with fondness (or cringe at the memory, if your car was a lemon). Unfortunately for most of us, our Derby Days are over, so we don’t get a chance to redeem ourselves at the wooden track.

If you were a Cub Scout back in the day, you may remember the Pinewood Derby with fondness (or cringe at the memory, if your car was a lemon). Unfortunately for most of us, our Derby Days are over, so we don’t get a chance to redeem ourselves at the wooden track.

Except… there is, at the Nerdy Derby, and because it’s a no-rules kind of competition, you can forget all of those silly restrictions we had to follow when building our Pinewood Derby cars.

At this year’s World Maker Faire New York, the first-ever Nerdy Derby will probably feature some outlandish car designs, because they’re competing for not only the winner’s slot, but also in categories such as Underdog, Tricked Out, Delicious, Not-so-pretty, and King of the Hill.

“The Nerdy Derby is a no-rules* miniature car building and racing competition inspired by the Cub Scouts’ Pinewood Derby. With a larger, more undulating track and no restrictions on the size of the cars or materials participants can use, the Nerdy Derby rewards creativity, cleverness and ingenuity.” – Nerdy Derby

Potential contestants can start building their cars by grabbing the specs for the wooden track and cars to be used at the Nerdy Derby, and even if you’re not that handy, you can also choose from a selection of pre-built Derby cars or make your own car on site in the workshop during the event.

The Nerdy Derby is being produced by a group of students from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, and all of the action takes place on September 29th and 30th at the New York Hall of Science in Queens.
