If you’ve got a closet (or maybe a garage) full of outdoor gear that you’ve invested your money in, but which only gets used once in a while, or if you’ve ever needed gear for just a weekend or a couple of times a year, and don’t want to buy your own, then you’ll be a prime candidate for joining the AirBnB of outdoor gear: Weekend Swap.
Those with gear to lend can upload photos and list their items at Weekend Swap, along with their preferred daily rental price and deposit cost, and put their hard-earned gear to work for them, even while they’re not using it. If you need to borrow something, such as a snowboard for the weekend, just search for the gear you need, make your payment on the site, and pick up the item at the agreed upon time.
Weekend Swap allows lenders to retain some (or all) of the borrower’s deposit in case of damage or loss of the item, and although listings are free, the company takes a small percentage of each transaction as a fee for providing the platform. Currently, the service is starting in San Francisco, but they are accepting listings from everywhere else as well.
