NB639 Fitness Headphones: $99.99
If you’re a regular gym goer, I’m sure you’ve noticed the onslaught of new, and forgotten old, members trying to stick to their January resolutions. Classes will be packed, treadmills will be difficult to come by and jabbering loafers will be crowding the stationary weight section.
This might be the right time to test out new devices that aim to make your workouts easier. Take for instance, the NB639 fitness headphones by New Balance and iHome. The buds have an integrated rechargeable data module that works as a pedometer, chronograph and a heart rate monitor. They're all fitness, all the time without sacrificing solid sound quality.
GET FIT: What Does It Mean to Be in Shape?
During a workout, a voice over can be prompted to relay real-time data (distance, steps taken) without pausing music. The clip-on module can also check a user’s heart rate while in motion by reading a thumb placed on its monitor. Once the workout is over, a summary of calories burned, distance ran and steps taken will be read. With the included HeartPal software and USB stick, the module can be hooked up to a PC (or Mac if software is downloaded from the site) and daily/weekly/monthly progress can be tracked and graphed.
The HeartPal program is simple and won't give you too much technical data, but it's just enough to know how your workout is progressing. This should keep you occupied and motivated enough to get through the after-holiday rush and on toward the early spring lull that inevitably follows.
