Wow. What a great story. A man who became trapped in the rubble of a collapsed building in Haiti survived with the help of a first aid application on his iPhone.

On January 12, Dan Woolley, who oversees interactive projects for the Christian child advocacy organization Compassion International in Colorado Springs, CO, found himself alone, bleeding and trapped within the ruins of the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince.

He remembered that his iPhone had an application called "Pocket First Aid and CPR" from Jive Media that contained survival information from the American Heart Association. Based on the advice from the app, here's what he did:

  • Used his shirt to bandage his leg
  • Tied his belt around the wound.
  • Pressed a sock to his bleeding head.
  • Set his phone alarm to go off every 20 minutes so that he wouldn't fall asleep, which could endanger him if he were undergoing shock or had a concussion.

Wolley had been wearing a camera around his neck when the quake struck, too. He used it to take pictures of his surroundings, since he was unable to see well in the dark and had lost his glasses. Using the camera, he saw an elevator, which he crawled into for safety. After 60 hours, rescuers pulled Woolley from the rubble.
