Tech is innovative, fun, and at times, really stressful. It’s easy to get caught up and lose the ability to find any sense of calm. So, it makes sense that the things that cause stress should work to relieve it. The emWave2 monitor by HeartMath monitors its wearer’s response to stress by measuring real-time readings of heart rate and breathing pace through an ear clip-on or through a button that checks the thumb. It then guides the user to a mind-body state they call “coherence.” Which is an understanding of calm between the mind and body.

To reach this state, LED lights provide a visual cue that follows and adjusts to the breath and another that changes color to coincide with heart rhythm -- red for less coherence, blue for medium and green for high. Different challenges can be set up through a computer program, which offers games and visuals to enhance the experience. The more time spent in the green zone the better the coherence, and once you know what this feels like it will be easier to get there. It won't relieve all of life’s stresses, but it could be a useful tool right before a nerve-racking event, like a speech, or to enhance a meditation practice.
