Handheld Vac From Dyson Pricey, But Powerful

DC-44 Digital Slim: $400

This weekend marks the official end of summer, which means quiet days ahead at home. Kids are back in school and working spouses are less tempted to call in sick. Whether you're a stay-at-home Mom or Dad, there's bound to be a mess left behind from all of the summer fun.

The Dyson DC-44 Digital Slim is an upgraded version of its previous cordless handheld, the DC-35. Unlike its predecessor, the DC-44 offers a long battery life (in terms of handheld vacs) of 20 fade-free minutes. The vacuum is lightweight, coming in at just 5 pounds and distributes that weight evenly enough to clean spaces high and low.

Like all of the Animal vacs from Dyson, the DC-44 comes with a new attachment especially for pet hair. The mini-motorized head has an anti-static carbon filament to pick up dust and hair from hard floor surfaces and connects to an extension wand for hard-to-reach spots.

As CNET points out, not only is the equipment upgraded, so is the price. The DC-35's starting price was $350 (now at $300), but the newest addition to the Digital Slim family? A whopping $400. For that price, you get the bagless technology and two-year warranty.

While the vac may be worth its weight in dust, crumbs and dog hair, it might be smart to wait out the initial release on September 3rd and see if this cleaning mini-monster goes on sale. Preferably before Thanksgiving.
