Research In Motion users all over the world experienced server outages that clogged message traffic and made accessing the Internet nearly impossible. This has been reported as the biggest blackout in the company’s history. Europe, Africa and the Middle East were first hit on Monday, with outages sweeping over the United States, Canada and Asia Wednesday morning.
According to RIM, the event was caused by a failure of a core switch at one of the network operations centers in Europe. After that switch failed, the backup system was supposed to take over, but it didn’t go as planned. This created a pile-up of data on the servers and left millions of Blackberry users with slow or no service. As of right now, e-mail has been restored and BBM is back on line in all regions.
This morning I received backlogged e-mail from early yesterday afternoon; for a blogger that's a long time. So I can imagine the frustration other journalists and everyone in Washington D.C. (practically BB central) faced. Arianna Huffington of the Huffington Post tweeted yesterday, "I'm traveling with AT&T BB, TMobile BB and Verizon BB. What else can a girl do? #blackberryoutage."
BLOG: Called it! Android Phones More Popular Than iPhones
On the same day that Blackberry was slowing dying, Apple's iOS 5 launched. In response, Microsoft tempted BB users with free Windows phones on Twitter. The iPhone 4S is selling in the millions, and Blackberry users like myself are growing more and more dissatisfied. It's safe to say that this has not been a good week for RIM, and the future of the company is bleak unless they can find some way to keep up with Android and iPhone and offer their users something those two can't.
