App Lets You Webcam As Obama, Walter White, More

Real-time face substitution apps aren’t necessarily new, but they’ve yet to be perfected. After all, who could forget Kyle McDonald and Arturo Castro’s creation that let users “become” an ugly Brad Pitt or Michael Jackson?

Inspired by McDonald and Castro’s project, Oslo computer-science artist Audun Mathias Oygard designed his own face substitution app using the JavaScript library clmtrackr. Visitors can log on to Oygard’s website, allow access to the webcam and sit still while the facemodel sizes them for a mask.

There’s a handsome list of new identities to chose from: the Terminator, Walter White, George Clooney, Rihanna, Audrey Hepburn, the Queen of England and Bill Murray, just to name a few. In perhaps an unintentional nod to the 90′s action-thriller Face/Off, Oygard even includes Nicholas Cage on the list. Sadly, there is no Travolta. Users who want to go totally abstract can choose from da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, a Picasso and Munch’s “The Scream.”

Oygard notes that the app works best with “good, even lighting” and with the Google Chrome browser. And it does work well — a lot less glitchy than previous face substitution apps. But don’t take my word for it, test drive it yourself.
