For people with a hearing loss, turning up the volume doesn’t always help. That's because each individual is more or less sensitive to different frequencies. ACEHearing, an app developed by researchers working in the ear, nose and throat department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, has found a way to improve sound in electronic devices by going beyond the volume button.

During clinical trials, the app played sounds through headphones across a range of frequencies and asked users whether they could hear them or not. Once the test was completed, the app adjusted the device’s audio output by amplifying the frequencies that were hardest to hear. Several smart phone manufacturers plan to include the feature into newer products.
