35 New Residents Delivered to the ISS: A Russian Soyuz spacecraft successfully docked with the space station today, delivering two cosmonauts (Oleg Novitskiy and Evgeny Tarelkin), one NASA astronaut (Kevin Ford) and 32 fish.
32 fish?! Yes, the International Space Station (ISS) will soon have a fish tank stocked with 32 small medaka fish. Actually, calling it a “fish tank” is woefully lame. The station’s new Aquatic Habitat was delivered by a Japanese cargo spacecraft in July and it’s a highly sophisticated life support system for the station’s new fishy friends.
The three new (human) residents are the second half of Expedition 33 and will remain on the orbiting outpost for 5 months. The 32 medaka fish will participate in an experiment to examine how aquatic life adapt to microgravity.
