Aug 6, 2012 — From an orbital perch 340 kilometers (211 miles) above Mars, NASA's sharp-eyed Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spied its new sister probe, Curiosity, making its parachute arrival on the Red Planet in the early hours of Monday morning.
ANALYSIS: Touch Down! Mars Rover Curiosity Lands
This picture was taken about six minutes after Curiosity entered the Martian atmosphere and a minute before the one-ton rover touched down inside an ancient impact basin near the planet's equator.
The orbiter will try to get another look at Curiosity on the ground in a few days.
