At 2:30 pm ET today, President Barack Obama will address an audience at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Cape Canaveral, Fla., to discuss plans for NASA's future. Since canceling a return mission to the Moon (the Constellation Program), Obama has faced bipartisan opposition, and the overriding concern is that without a destination, NASA will lose its way.

However, Obama has promised an increase in NASA funding to focus on technological development, ultimately helping mankind leave low-Earth orbit (LEO), something we haven't done since the Apollo missions of the early '70's. Most recently, the White House announced that it would save the Orion capsule (the Constellation Program spaceship that was proposed to supersede the shuttle), so this upcoming press conference promises to hold some surprises yet.

Discovery News correspondent Irene Klotz is currently at Cape Canaveral "live tweeting" the run-up to President Obama's speech (and hopefully from the event itself, security permitting). Irene's tweets (from @Free_Space) will automatically update below. Live coverage from NASA TV (via the SpaceflightNow feed) will hopefully accompany Irene's coverage.

WIDE ANGLE: Why was the Constellation Program canceled in the first place?
