How to Discover An Element: Gotta-See Video

//

How many elements are on the Periodic Table? As of today we're pretty sure there are 118, but everything over 112 is still up in the air, so to speak. If you saw Iron Man 2, then you watched as (spoiler alert) Tony Stark "created a new element." I'm not going to get into a symantic argument of creation versus discovery, but how does one actually find a "new" element?

Here, you can learn the specifics of how Japanese researchers discovered element 113 — currently named Ununtrium — using a tennis ball and what appears to be a squeaky toy. Educational, and accidentally hilarious! via SkepTV
