April 5, 2012 — A 70-meter-wide dust devil was caught in the act of whirling its way across the surface of Mars in this image, taken by the HiRISE camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on March 14.

The spinning column of dust and warm air extends nearly 12 miles (20 kilometers) into the sky, casting a dark shadow on the reddish, rocky Martian surface.
