A crescent moon rises above the cusp of Earth’s atmosphere from the vantage point of the International Space Station, an orbital research laboratory flying about 260 miles above Earth. Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata posted this picture on Twitter on Feb. 1.

The colorful atmospheric layering is due to the Earth’s atmosphere refracting beams of sunlight, much like a prism separates sunlight into its component wavelengths.
