Feb. 11, 2012 -- Whitney Houston, a pop music legend who belted out memorable ballads including "I Will Always Love You" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" has died at age 48, The Associated Press reports.

The Grammy Award-winning singer sold more than 170 million albums worldwide and peaked during the mid 1980s to late 1990s. Her success in music led her to starring roles in movies, including "Waiting to Exhale."

Her career suffered when she admitted to using cocaine, pills and other drugs during an abusive relationship with her former husband, Bobby Brown. The couple had a daughter, Bobby Kristina, in 1993.

Some of Houston's later performances were marred by erratic behavior and she had suffered from health issues in recent years.

Houston's publicist Kristen Foster told The Associated Press that the singer had died, but declined to name the cause.
