Sugar Makes You Stupid: Got a sweet tooth? Be warned. A diet high in sugar can disrupt the memory and learning functions of the brain, say researchers at UCLA's Brain Research Institute and Brain Injury Research Center. In fact, eating too much sugar over a time span of just six short weeks can dumb you down.
The results come from tests done on rats, who were fed a sugar-high diet and were also deprived of omega-3 fatty acids. After six week they were put in a maze, which they had previously run well. A second group of rats were kept on a sugar-free diet.
The rats fed sugar were slower and "their brains showed a decline in synaptic activity. Their brain cells had trouble signaling each other, disrupting the rats' ability to think clearly and recall the route they'd learned six weeks earlier," said Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery. The study also showed that omega-3 fatty acids can actually counteract the disruption. via DVICE
