Online Map Shows Gun Permit
Holders: The decision by a New York newspaper to publish the names and
addresses of handgun permit holders in several counties has raised the ire of
thousands, reports CNN.com.
The Journal News published an interactive map on its website that
garnered over 1,800 comments as of this afternoon, most of them not in support of
publishing the information, even in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School
shooting.
The map only addresses people in Westchester and Rockland counties who have
permits to own a handgun, not whether they actually own one, the newspaper's website
says.
It doesn't address rifles or shotguns, which don't require a permit in those
counties.
Despite the overwhelmingly negative comments, the newspaper stood firm. "Our readers are
understandably interested to know about guns in their neighborhoods," said Editor and
Vice President, CynDee Royle, in a statement.
