Math is Literally Painful for Some: For
some, just the anticipation of coming face to face with math is as acute as the anticipation of being
physically hurt, reports PopSci.com.
It was a small study, only 28 people, but researchers at the
University of Chicago exposed the people to different situations involving math: going to a math class,
anticipating doing math and actually working on a math problem.
Using an MRI, they could see that the most
anxiety-provoking activity was just before a study participant received a math problem.
It created a
similar reaction in the brain to knowing a burn was coming from a hot stove.
