Schoolgirl Activist Leaves Hospital: Malala Yousafzai, the 15-year-old Pakistani schoolgirl who was
shot in the head by Taliban militants, was able to leave the hospital on
Thursday, walking on her own.
Yousafzai had undergone treatment at Queen Elizabeth
Hospital in Birmingham, England. The hospital released a statement saying that
Yousafzai was "well enough to be treated by the hospital as an outpatient for
the next few weeks," the hospital said in a statement.
"She is still due to be
readmitted in late January or early February to undergo cranial reconstructive
surgery as part of her long-term recovery, and in the meantime she will visit
the hospital regularly to
attend clinical appointments."
The hospital also released video (screengrab at left) showing Yousafzai walking out of
the hospital and waving.
Yousafzai has been an advocate for Pakistani schoolgirls’
right to attend school. She began her
advocacy at the age of 11, when the BBC's Urdu-language service published her
blog, "Diary of a
Pakistani Schoolgirl." She was also featured in a documentary by Adam Ellick. Yousafzai was shot in October while riding in bus with
other girls on their way home from school. via New York Times
