We don’t give much thought to the walls and roof that shelter us each day. But what if your house was capable of feeling?

A new connected home concept aims to make us feel more connected not to a smart grid but to the house itself. From design firm Artefact, Serenity, a red dot Design Concept winner, is a smart home operating system that adds a layer of emotion.

Instead of the typical meter, number, or dial representing our current consumptive state, why not have a little fun with the data? Why not create awareness through a metaphor of something we care about? Why not make it an engaging interaction that becomes a pleasurable activity? Why not make it art?

Rather than using a dashboard cluttered with figures, Serenity visualizes the home’s stats with e-ink devices that show status updates and controls. For example, to show your energy usage, the screen for one of these devices displays a plant, with leaves that turn green when you’re living sustainably or leaves that fall off when you’re consuming excessively. “Empathy develops toward the health of your house. It feels alive, and like all living things you want to thrive.”
