“Three months of camp life on Lake Tahoe,” wrote Mark Twain in his semi-autobiographical travel collection Roughing It, “would restore an Egyptian mummy to his pristine vigor.” But the truth is, it doesn’t take three months to come away from Lake Tahoe feeling refreshed and rejuvenated: Even an action-packed long weekend will do.
And to be clear: We’re not talking about the kind of refreshed one feels after a weekend at the spa. This is the kind of rejuvenation that only comes from hard work, exercise, and that delightful feeling that comes from earning a night’s sleep.
Indeed, having the time to indulge in extended, intense, physical activity has become a luxury for most of us—and as such, it takes a vacation to get worn out.
If this sounds like something you have been craving, there is perhaps no better destination for a long weekend than Lake Tahoe, California.
Rock Climbing: Lover’s Leap—as the cliffs surrounding Tahoe South are known—has been attracting climbers for decades. The area offers textured granite that is more friendly to those new to the Sierras than Yosemite’s polished cracks. Add to this a mix of trad routes at all grades and nearby sport climbing, too, and this is a great way to stretch out and work those climbing muscles.
Hiking and Running: The Tahoe Rim trail stretches 165 miles around the entire lake. The thing that makes it spectacular is, whenever given a choice, the trail climbs to a nearby prominence instead of taking a more low-lying path. This means that the trail offers a guaranteed challenge that is rewarded by incredible views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
Cycling: Lake Tahoe offers plenty of routes for mountain and road cyclists alike. Whether hammering miles on the rolling roads or grinding down the miles of trails, Tahoe will offer an endless number of miles for two-wheeled adventures.
Water Sports: Oh yeah, there’s a lake too. From kayaking to kite-boarding, swimming to SCUBA diving, Lake Tahoe is a popular destination for the full range of water-based activities.
Clearly, Lake Tahoe is the place to go for a vacation that will leave you more fit than when you left.
