Stupid Pet Presents
With Halloween officially past us, Americans are gearing up for the holiday season. Across the nation, shoppers are asking themselves one critical question: What do I get for my pet this year?
If a new bowl just isn't suited to the tastes of your cat or dog, there are plenty of other luxury and exotic pet items that cater to even the most discriminating canine or feline sensibilities. Here are some of the most unusual.
Talking cats are no longer confined to fairy tales or computer-animated films, thanks to toymaker Takara, based out of Japan.
This device translates a cat's cry based on the pitch of its call and analyzes the voice print to decode what the cat is trying to communicate. The message, taken from a vocabulary of more than 200 words, is then translated for the owner on a liquid crystal display.
A snake might be an exotic pet, but that doesn't mean it doesn't occasionally like to get out and stretch its figurative legs like any other animal.
This snake walker is designed to assist owners with just about any sized serpent in taking their pet on a walk through the neighborhood. This illustration comes directly from the patent for the device, originally issued in 2002.
For a Good Time...
Have you ever looked at your dog, already waste-deep in your favorite pair of shoes, and thought, That is an animal that isn't getting enough stimulation?
Made of soft rubber and silicon, this "Doggie Love Doll" may be the answer. Plus, the manufacturer, PetSmiling, insists its easy to clean. Launched in Sao Paolo, Brazil, this product has since spawned a host of imitators, proof of the success of this design.
Follow Me on Twitter
Puppy Tweets is a product designed for the pet owner who feels that he or she already doesn't have enough texts, e-mails, tweets, and status updates to sort through everyday.
As the name suggests, the dog tag allows your pet to use Twitter...sort of. Along with a receiver connected to a local computer, the product works with a sound and motion sensor that automatically tweets prewritten statements based on your dog's activity.
No More Scooping
Every pet owner who has ever had to carry a pocket full of plastic baggies whenever walking their dog will tell you how much they'd prefer an alternative.
Whether they're willing to humiliate their pet with a diaper for the slim prospect of a cleaner experience, however, is every owner's choice.
This colorful diaper for dogs ensures your pet will discreetly contain its droppings when its owner takes it out in public. As an added bonus, some varieties of this product are machine washable, so you can toss it right in with your laundry.
At the Dog Wash
When a hose or a bathtub isn't enough to get your dirty mutt clean, why not take it down to the dog wash?
Not unlike a washing machine, this pet-bathing device puts dogs through a series of cycles -- washing, cleaning, disinfecting, drying, and, finally, adding fragrance -- and leaves them spring-time fresh, if not also a little shaken.
For any pet owners who can't leave their pets behind in some moderately-priced kennel, luxury pet hotels are ready to cater to cats and dogs who favor the finer things just as much as their human companions.
These hotels typically include grooming services, complete with a selection of canine fragrances; social occasions for the well-to-do canines to network; and, of course, the occasional massage.
If your cat or dog needs to lose a few pounds, why not simply sign them up for a gym membership?
While overweight animals may stand to benefit from these facilities, many of them in fact cater to dogs or cats dealing with joint pain or other health issues.
