Unless you’re quite wealthy, caviar is a rare treat- something to be saved, and savored. So it’s distressing to see contestants in the Moscow equivalent of Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, racing to finish half a kilogram of black caviar as quickly as possible.
The winner: Alexander Valov, 49. Time: one minute, 26 seconds. The cost of the caviar: nearly $5,000. The prize: 10,000 rubles ($340). And 500 grams of caviar.
The contest, the first of its kind, was held at a fancy Moscow restaurant; the twelve competitors were chosen by lottery. It was organized by Alexander Novikov, who said he sees it as similar to American-style contests, reported The Telegraph.
Maybe so- but not one saves up to buy a Nathan’s hot dog for Christmas dinner.
