Nearly 15 Percent Going Hungry: Almost 15
percent of U.S. households struggled to get enough food in 2011, up slightly from the 14.5 percent of
households in the same situation in 2010, NPR reports USDA as saying.
Also, a third of those "food
insecure" households — about 5.7 percent of U.S. households — went hungry at one time or another during 2011, USDA said.
These sobering numbers come as food
stamp usage hit a historical high in June, with 46.7 million people, or over 15 percent of the population,
receiving the benefit, NPR reports.
