Drinking Champagne Improves Memory

//

The next time you raise a toast, you can feel good not only about what you’re celebrating but also that the bubbly beverage is improving your memory. Scientists from the University of Reading in the U.K. have shown that the phenolic compounds found in champagne can improve spatial memory. The compounds, which are more concentrated in champagne than in white wine, alter proteins linked to the brain’s ability to store memories — the same proteins that seem to deteriorate with age.

“We encourage a responsible approach to alcohol consumption, and our results suggest that a very low intake of one to two glasses a week can be effective,” professor Jeremy Spencer said in a press release.

If drinking champagne doesn’t appeal to you, you can get some of the same results by eating other polyphenol-rich foods, such as blueberry and cocoa.
