Deadly Sunbeds on the Wane: The global sunbed
industry is facing trying times as more and more are shut down by legislation that bans teens from using
them, reports Business Week.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that using
sunbeds before the age of 35 hikes melanoma risk 75 percent.
Twenty-four countries have either banned
indoor tanning entirely or acted nationally to prevent under 18s from doing it. Two U.S. states –
California and Vermont — have banished teens from sunbeds.
According to the American Cancer Society,
women's odds of getting melanoma by 39 are 1 in 377; for men, 1 in 677.
Some forms of melanoma are among
the deadliest types of cancer there are.
