July 20, 2011 — Chinese beekeeper Lu Kongjiang, 20, waves as bees cover his body during a contest against 42-year-old Wang Dalin, also a beekeeper, in Longhui County of Shaoyang City, central China's Hunan Province on July 17, 2011.

The two men wore only shorts, goggles, and nose plugs to protect themselves. Each man had a queen bee that had been removed from its hive and captured in a miniature cage tied around his neck. After a few minutes, the scent of the queen started attracting her followers and the bees swarmed the men. (No reports mentioned whether either man was stung.)

The competitors were standing on a scale, so that the weight added by the bees could be measured.

WIDE ANGLE: Bees on the Brink

While these bee-wearers were impressive, they didn't come close to the current Guinness Book of Record-holder in the category for "most pounds of bees worn on the body." That honor is held by U.S. animal trainer Mark Biancaniello who attracted 39.5 kilos (87 lbs) of bees onto his body.

Wang Dalin (below) finally won in the hour-long contest with 26 kilograms (57 lbs) of bees covering his body. Lu was covered with 22.93 kilograms (50 lbs) of bees.
