A $10,000 College Degree

Texas A&M University–San Antonio now offers a bachelor’s degree in information technology for the bargain price of $9,700. The first graduating class will get their diplomas in 2016. Making it happen requires a collaboration with community colleges and a stripped-down version of the college’s IT curriculum. The students begin their college education as juniors in high school by taking dual credit courses. From there, they move to the community college where they get an associate’s degree in applied science. Finally, they transfer to the university and take 70 hours of senior-level courses.

Although the affordable degree will give disadvantaged kids a chance to become employable, critics worry that a cheap degree will result in subpar education. But with college tuition costs exceeding what many can afford, this creative approach to a degree may be what thousands of kids need to succeed. via IEEE Spectrum
