Aug. 3, 2010 -- The Banquet of Cleopatra, shown here, by Giambattista Tiepolo (1696 - 1770) illustrates the moment that Cleopatra dropped the pearl into her glass. Cleopatra was often portrayed as a white woman by artists of the Renaissance. Here, she is wearing a dress more characteristic of that time rather than her own. Although Tiepolo used Cleopatra as a subject in much of his work, particularly her meeting with Marc Antony, the artist would likely not have known how the Egyptian queen actually dressed. Read More
