June 23, 2010 -- You may not know the name of the nurse who appears in this photo, but few have not seen her image before. The nurse, Edith Shain, died today at the age of 91.

This photograph was taken after the Japanese surrendered to Allied forces, marking the end of World War 2. The entire nation celebrated the occasion, which was known as "Victory over Japan Day," or V-J Day.

On Aug. 14, 1945, Shain went into Times Square to join the soldiers, sailors and civilians celebrating the victory. She was then grabbed and kissed by an American sailor, whose identity remains unknown even to this day.

The photo, taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt, was picked up by Life magazine and would come to represent the spirit of the United States in the wake of an Allied victory.

Shain, who spent most of her life teaching in Los Angeles public schools, died at her home in Los Angeles. She is survived by her three sons, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
