June 23, 2011 --After 16 years on the run, 81-year-old Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger was arrested at a residence in Santa Monica, Calif. Wednesday, along with his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, according to the Los Angeles Times.
FBI agents took the two into custody without incident at their apartment after authorities received a tip from an FBI outreach campaign, according to the Times.
Authorities "seized weapons and a large amount of cash" from the apartment, according to the newspaper. TV ads had not run in the Los Angeles area, but had been seen in San Diego and San Francisco, said the Times.
Bulger had been living on the third floor of The Princess Eugenia, a three-story, 28-unit building of one and two-bedroom apartments three blocks from a bluff that overlooks the Pacific Ocean, according to the Associated Press.
The inspiration of several books and once portrayed by Jack Nicholson in the 2006 film, "The Departed," Bulger had been on the FBI's 10 most wanted fugitive list, and the agency had a $2-million reward out for his arrest. Bulger was living under the name Charlie Rosenzweig, while Grieg, 60, was known as Heather Fein, according to the FBI's website.
Bulger's last confirmed sighting was in London in 2002, the FBI told the Los Angeles Times. He was believed to have altered his appearance and traveled throughout Europe, Mexico, Canada and the United States.
