The Berlin Wall was long...about 90 miles long.
When the East Germans first closed the border between East and West Berlin on the night of August 12th, 1961, they did it in the middle of the night. That meant none of the Berliners knew what was happening until they awoke the next morning - possibly too late to do anything about it.
Eventually the wall - which began as a barbed wire fence - enclosed all of West Berlin. That's a lot of concrete to deal with once you no longer want or need that barrier.
We hear a lot of about the psychological and social ramifications of the wall coming down...but what about the physical ramifications? What happened to all that concrete?
