Sept. 12, 2010 -- Need a little bling in your life? Here's your chance.
The auction house, Christie's will soon be offering a two-stone ring featuring an extremely rare triangular-shaped blue diamond paired with a white diamond on a gold band. The auction for the BVLGARI diamonds could bring a cool $15 million.
The 10.95-carat blue diamond is the largest of its kind ever to come to auction, according to Christie's.
"Fancy Vivid blue diamonds of this size are among the most sought-after of colored diamonds and remain extremely difficult to find, given the scarcity of natural colored rough," said Rahul Kadakia, Head of Jewelry for Christie’s Americas.
According to Christie's, the ring is being offered by a private European collector who has kept the ring in his family for almost 40 years. According to family lore, the ring was given as a gift from the collector to his wife in celebration of the birth of their first baby boy. The sale price in 1972 was about $1 million.
The Bulgari blue diamond most likely came from the Premier Diamond Mine in South Africa, according to the Associated Press. This is one of the only mines in the world to produce blue diamonds.
Blue diamonds have been known to garner high prices. Last year a 7.03-carat blue diamond sold at Sotheby's for $9.5 million, setting the highest price ever for a blue gem.
