Winter Storms to Get Names: The Weather
Channel is going to help us all out this winter by naming major winter storms, it reports on its website.
In an article outlining its reasons for adopting a naming system similar to the one used by the National
Hurricane Center for hurricanes, The Weather Channel's Tom Niziol named four reasons: to raise awareness;
make the storm easier to follow; ease of reference in social media; and historical record-keeping.
He also
notes that there is no agency like the NHC that looks after winter storms. Since The Weather Channel is
already paying attention, it makes sense for "a partner in the weather industry to take on the
responsibility of developing a new concept."
And why not? What would you name the first big winter storm
of the 2012-13 season? I'm going for Frosty.
