Gentle reader: The roots of all witch hunts, as we learned centuries ago, are buried in human psychology. Sadly, the current crescendo in the witch hunt against climate scientists is no different. Happily, however, there are people who study these things and can give us insights into why some folks are particularly vulnerable to the misinformation campaign that has been so successfully poisoning public opinion against a huge amount of extremely good science. I refer you to this very informative article by George Monbiot in Conservation Magazine (a mag I highly recommend, by the way -- well written and illustrated with great features and news).
