Smaller tsunami waves than expected have washed ashore several islands in Hawaii this evening following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Canada's Queen Charlotte islands.
The largest of the waves so far struck Maui's Kahului beach with an amplitude of about two feet, which is measured relative to normal sea level, not crest-to-trough at 10:47pm local time Saturday (0847 GMT Sunday).
Evacuation centers remain open as the warning continues in effect for Hawaii.
