Tasty Genetic Tomatoes: Grocery store tomatoes have for years relied on mutant genes to delay ripening and though they may look beautiful, they can’t compete when it comes to taste to home-grown tomatoes on the vine. That may change in five years. Scientists reporting in Nature have sequenced the tomato genome and can now begin deciphering which genes do what in order to strategically delay shelf-life without delaying flavor development. via BBC
