Lorax_teaser_posterDr. Seuss' Lorax has always spoken for the trees, but now he speaks for nearly 70 sponsors of Universal Pictures' new Lorax movie, due to be released March 2 in North America.

But the Lorax won't be hawking Hummers or selling Thneeds for the Once-ler. Only organizations protecting Truffula Trees and the Bar-ba-loot habitat they create, reducing smogulous smoke emissions, or otherwise being environmentally responsible get the Lorax seal of approval.

"Our partners needed to legitimately be in the environmental space," said Universal's president of partnerships and licensing, Stephanie Sperber, in an interview with the Associated Press. "The brands and messages had to ring true to the Lorax story."

Some of the Lorax promotions include, according to the AP:
Environmental Protection Agency – The Lorax  promoting efficient Energy Star appliances
Hilton's DoubleTree hotels – Sponsoring a Lorax-themed eco-tourism trip for four to Costa Rica
Seventh Generation household products – Pasting "Lorax Approved" labels on millions of items, including a liquid detergent bottle made from recycled paper
International House of Pancakes – Serving Seuss' iconic green eggs and ham and distributing seeds

Universal's website also offers tips on how to make more ecologically friendly choices, such as:

  • Buy locally produced goods as much as possible. This cuts down on carbon emissions and helps support your local economy.
  • Buy organic food and other organic products as much as you can.
  • Keep the thermostat between 65-68 degrees and wear layers in the winter months.

Although the new movie strays from the original plot of Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel's classic environmentalist work, it still carries the message of protecting Truffula Trees and the Bar-ba-loot habitat they create, as well as urging reductions in smogulous smoke reduction.
